Strood Town Centre project

The project aims to improve:

  • the reliability of journey times through the town
  • pedestrian facilities
  • the look and feel of the town to encourage more people to visit.

We are also aiming to boost economic growth, provide new jobs in the town and create a place that people are proud to live, work and visit.

A new leaflet was delivered in August 2019 to 22,000 businesses and residents in Strood providing an update on the planned improvements.

Final improvements

The main work has now been completed across Strood Town Centre. Following the final road safety audit, some minor work will be carried out in the next few months. There will also be some extra works to improve the traffic signal network.

Architectural lighting to St Nicholas Church

Following our heritage and planning permission approval, works are currently ongoing.

During the works, we found a number of archaeology finds which are being recorded and catalogued. This information will be presented to the church to help them understand the church area more and the role it has played in Strood over the centuries.

We expect to have the lighting installed during May and June 2021 with the lighting fully working shortly after.

Architectural lighting to railway arches on North Street, Station Road and A2, High Street

New lighting was successfully installed on the railway arches in North Street and Station Road.

The rail bridge over the A2 High Street has also been cleaned and improved. We expect to complete the lighting work by June 2021.

Business compensation is not considered

The works are intended to boost the regeneration of Strood and the attractiveness of Strood for residents and businesses.

This is seen as a benefit to all businesses located in Strood, the advantages of which are likely to outweigh any short-term inconvenience.  For this reason, Medway is not considering compensation to businesses.

Consultation

We have previously held consultations about the proposed improvements. View the results in the Final Strood Draft Action Plan Consultation Report.

Strood Train Station

The project has also provided funding towards the new railway station building at Strood, which was delivered by Southeastern and opened in 2017 as part of the National Station Improvement Programme.
