Strood Local Growth Fund

Strood Local Growth Fund

In 2015 Medway Council successfully secured £9m for Strood Town Centre from the Local Growth Fund.  This funding is to deliver a collection of projects in Strood which seek to improve traffic flow and transportation systems as well as investing in significant improvements to the public realm, and retail offer and includes a match funding contribution towards Network Rail/Southeastern’s planned improvements at Strood station.

The scheme objectives are to:

  • Improve journey time reliability and reduce congestion.
  • Deliver a safe and attractive environment for those that walk, cycle or use public transport.
  • Renew and refresh the urban realm and retail environment.
  • Create a feeling of place.

We believe that the above objectives will lead to the following outcomes:

  • Local people and new residents will choose Strood Town Centre as their preferred destination for retail or leisure activities.
  • Success will lead to economic growth, new jobs and increased land values.
  • The town centre will be very well connected to new residential development areas.
  • Visitors and those passing through will travel at a consistent speed and easily be able to find their way.

In Summer 2016 the draft proposals for the improvements were presented to the public and key stakeholders as part of a consultation exercise.  The results of the consultation are detailed in the Final Strood Draft Action Plan Consultation Report.  These are the Strood proposals which were consulted on.

Following the consultation detailed design is now being undertaken with work planned to start in Spring 2017 and running through to 2018.  Further details of the proposals will be available on this webpage in due course.
