What is adult abuse

Abuse can happen anywhere including:

  • at home
  • in care homes
  • in public.

It could be a single act, or can take place over a long period of time.

Some adults are more at risk of abuse than others as they are not able to protect themselves from abuse. This could be because they:

  • are elderly
  • are disabled
  • rely on others to meet their care needs.

Abuse could be:

  • physical
  • sexual
  • neglect and self-neglect
  • financial or material
  • emotional
  • domestic abuse
  • human trafficking
  • female genital mutilation
  • modern day slavery.
