Short Breaks Proposal

Proposed changes at Aut Even and Parklands.

Medway Council is looking at a proposal to move the provision of overnight short breaks services from Aut Even to Parklands.

Currently overnight short breaks for Medway children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are provided at Aut Even, in Patrixbourne Avenue, Twydall, ME8 6UF.  However, Medway Council is considering moving this service to Parklands, in Oxford Road, Gillingham, ME7 4BY.

There is no proposal to change the overnight Short Breaks service, or the criteria for qualifying for Short Breaks.

Staff would be moving with the service and, although there will be some minor changes, the same familiar staff faces would still be helping children at Parklands.

The two main reasons for undertaking this change are to:

-Provide more purpose-built facilities in a suitable setting

-Improve the service by having more internal and external space to use

The facilities at Parklands are newer and purpose-built for overnight Short Breaks, whereas the Aut Even building has some limitations, both within the building and immediate environment.  We also feel that Parklands is better suited for the ongoing provision of Short Breaks as it has better parking and turning facilities and is not positioned too far away from Aut Even, so would not affect travelling for families using the service.  Parklands also has a secure gated access and is adjacent to a park.

After school and other services would still be delivered from Parklands. We are proposing to make some adaptations to the building to allow this, including providing separate access for Short Breaks and After school children.  As Parklands is already used for after school activities for SEND children, we hope this would ease the transition for children who may not like change or anything unfamiliar as they will still be attending the same place.

We would make some physical changes to Parklands’ first floor to make sure it offers the best facilities possible, this would include looking at the possibility of adding an extra bedroom so that we would be able to accommodate more children than is currently possible at Aut Even.
