Environmental enforcement

We work to protect the environment and provide a pleasant and clean area in which to live, work and visit.

There are two teams that deal specifically with environmental issues:

Street Scene Enforcement Officers

Medway Council's Street Scene Enforcement Officers are a uniformed team who help improve the quality of our local environment.

Environmental Enforcement Team

This team enforces issues concerning:

Report environmental problems including litter dropping, smoking in prohibited areas, vehicle repairs on highways, illegal car sales, illegal street trading.

The team investigates incidents of environmental crime, prosecutes those who break the law and enforces the Medway Council Act 2004.

Using powers under the Environmental Protection Act 1990  the team also enforces against people who litter. Officers can issue £80 penalty fines to people seen littering in Medway. The fine is reduced to £60 if it is paid within 10 days of being issued. They also prosecute people who fly-post.

Everyone has a legal responsibility to dispose of waste properly. All waste must be dealt with by a registered carrier. If someone claims to be registered but you are unsure, call the Environment Agency on 08708 506506 and request an instant Waste Carrier Validation. You can also use the Environment Agency's website.
