Bikeability training booking procedure for schools
Each year, junior schools in Medway are offered the chance to
book free cyclist training
courses that meet level two of the National Standard for Cyclist
The Bikeability training is being funded by a grant from the
Department for Transport (DfT), and training is being delivered
to National Standards as stipulated by the DfT.
Courses for the next academic year begin in September
Level 2 training normally consists of five consecutive morning
sessions or five consecutive afternoon sessions, each session
lasting up to two hours. There is a maximum of 12 and a minimum of
eight pupils per course.
Children must be aged 10 years or older, which
is why the council offers this service initially to Year 6. If any
school would like to do more to promote cycling to school, however,
Year 5 pupils can be trained, provided they meet the minimum age
There is no limit to the number of courses that may be booked
but because of the demand for courses in the summer months, it is
recommended that bookings are made early, even if schools are
unsure of the number of pupils requiring training the following
year. Bookings will be dealt with on a first-come,
first-served basis. To do this, please complete
and return the booking form by email or post to the address on the
Confirmations will be sent out by email back to schools within
four weeks of the council receiving the booking form.
As Level 2 courses are designed to develop on-road cycling
skills and not to teach basic skills, it is a course entry
requirement that all pupils are able to demonstrate the Level 1
skills at the beginning of the course. Please download the Level 1
Assessment Form and use it as an aid to select course participants,
as this will often prevent unnecessary disappointment through the
removal of a pupil part way through the course.
This skills list may be sent home for parents and/or pupils to
assess a few weeks before the course. Should a school wish to carry
out Level 1 assessments or instruction, the Integrated
Transport Team can provide advice and materials on
When sending invitations to parents and carers to apply for
places on the course, the consent form, helmet advice and "Know
about your bike" sheets must be included with the letter of
invitation. The completed consent forms must be
given to the instructors before the start of each course, otherwise
pupils will be unable to take part.
Pupils who do not meet the assessment criteria for Level
1 or who have a bike that the instructors consider unsafe for road
use will be removed from the course.
The wearing of helmets on the course is strongly
All pupils who achieve Bikeability Level 2 will receive a badge
and a certificate.
