Disability sport

Medway is a great place to take part in a wide variety of disability sports.

Wheelchair rugby league action from the England v France test match held at Medway Park Medway Council is proud of its record of bringing major disability sports events to Medway, to establish new clubs and disability sections in existing clubs and to promote all the opportunities available in disability sport.

We hold regular disability sports taster days and sessions to highlight the range of disability sports available to residents and help clubs attract new members.Wheelchair Rugby at 2016 Disability Sport Open Day

Medway Park regularly hosts international and national disability events and is the official home of England Wheelchair Rugby League.

Medway Sport also organises an annual Disability Sport Open Day and the Disability Youth Games schools competition programme.

Saturday 23 September, 11am to 3pm

Head to Medway Park for an action-packed day of free sports tasters and activities at our annual Disability Sport Open Day in partnership with Medway Community Healthcare.

The event is free and open to all - children and adults, with or without a disability.

Activities on offer during the day include: wheelchair basketball, rugby league, tennis, dance, football, swimming, athletics and many more. 

Disability charities, rehab physios, sports equipment and transport suppliers will also be on hand to provide information and support on the day.

No booking required. Just turn up, enjoy the activities and find out about what sporting opportunities and support services are available in Medway.

Free goodie bag for all participants. All equipment provided.

IFI Gym Membership

An Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) Gym Membership is available to those registered disabled and it's only £20 per month.

You will get unlimited access to Medway Park, Strood Sports Centre, Hoo Sports Centre, Splashes and The Strand including:

  • Four fully-equipped gyms  
  • Full fitness class timetable with more than 200 classes and 7 days advance priority booking
  • Five swimming pools including outdoor, leisure pool, hydrotherapy and diving pit
  • Specialised functional fitness zones at Medway Park, Strood and Hoo sports centres

Club and Communit Disability Sport Activities

Multi Sport Club at Medway Park An opportunity to come and find more about getting involved in sport whatever your ability. Community coach led sessions to include new age kurling, boccia, wheelchair sports and more every Wednesday between 5.30pm to 7pm. £1 per session (first session free). Medway and Maidstone AC disability athletics

Medway Park, Saturday mornings 11.45am to 1.15pm. Open to anyone aged 10 years +. Adults and children welcome. Sessions are open to athletes with all disabilities. Coaching in a variety of Paralympic athletics disciplines. Sports wheelchairs are provided. Contact Jim Sheehy Touchdown@talktalk.net

 

Boccia

Boccia is an attack and defend game, with two sides competing over a set number of ends. The aim is to score as many points as possible by placing their set of coloured balls closest to the white jack ball. Prince Arthur Bowls Club

Wheelchair/Rollator Dance

Wheel Be Dancing with Walderslade Together (WALT) is bringing a new, accessible dance style to Medway for all ages and abilities. With the use of Rollators (zimmer frames on wheels) those who have balance issues or limited mobility can be supported by their Rollator in a safe way to join in the dance to music.
