Fit to Go

Wednesdays, 8pm, Medway Park, £3 per person.

Taking the first steps towards living an active life can be difficult. Finding the impetus to do some exercise and building time into busy lives is easier said than done.

Fit To Go is our new activity programme at Medway Park to help you take those first tentative steps into a fitter, healthier lifestyle. 

The weekly programme includes a range of sport and exercise activities available in Medway sports centres, giving people a flavour of what they could do on a more regular basis.

Activity sessions will be led by a team of sports coaches, ensuring participants are supported through the sessions and have someone to work with on an individual basis if needed.  Coaches will use team sports, group exercise classes and individual training to show people the different forms regular exercise can take.

The coaches will offer support between the weekly sessions.  This mentoring support will help participants commit to the programme should their interest decrease at any point.

Sessions start on Wednesday, 19 April 2017. They run from 8pm to 9.30pm and cost £3. All equipment provided.

Fit to Go is being delivered in partnership with the University of Kent Sport.

Fit 2 Tackle is our new community programme targeted at anyone who is keen to lose weight and benefit from a healthy lifestyle.

We have joined forces with Gillingham Football Club Community Trust, the A Better Medway campaign, Organic Training and the University of Kent Sport to help kick start healthy lifestyles for men and women keen to get fit and improve their health.

Using the power of football as an extra motivation, participants embark on a free 12-week programme of workshops and fitness sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings to help them lose weight and understand how to adopt a sustainable, healthy lifestyle.

The focus is on the impact of the activity and multiple health benefits rather than just the weight loss, but there will be a prize for the participant who loses the most weight.

The programme  

  • 10 weekday workshops/theory sessions delivered over 12 weeks at Medway Park by health experts. The workshops will be followed by a low-intensity activity session.      
  • One weekly physical activity session themed around football at Strood Sports Centre run by Gillingham FC Community Trust.
  • Free pedometer for every participant

At the end of the 12 weeks there will a prize ceremony where members will receive a goodie bag including a six week Medway Sport membership and ticket to an upcoming Gillingham FC game, whilst the Biggest Loser will win a signed Gillingham FC shirt.

In addition to their six-week free Medway Sport membership, participants will be signposted to regular football and other activity sessions that they can continue with to remain active.

Who can take part

Fit 2 Tackle participants are being recruited through Gillingham FC's fan base, from the Medway Public Health Team's Healthyway waiting list and from the wider Medway community. The scheme is aimed at men and women aged 25-55, especially those with a BMI of 30-40.
