Brownfield Register

The Government has set out its commitment to introduce a statutory brownfield register and ensure that 90% of suitable brownfield sites have planning permission for housing by 2020. It is part of the government’s aim to boost the supply of housing land and to deliver plans for increased housebuilding. Brownfield registers will contain a standard set of information that will be kept up-to-date and published to help provide certainty for developers and communities. Medway Council was asked to take part in an early pilot scheme to test out the approaches to be taken in the roll out of the Brownfield Land register, following the Housing and Planning Act 2016.

Once the statutory requirement for preparing brownfield registers comes into force, it is expected that local planning authorities are to take a positive and proactive approach when considering granting permission in principle for sites included on their registers. It should be noted that the ‘permission in principle’ does not form part of the pilot scheme at this stage.

The brownfield register can be down downloaded using the link below:

Sites currently included onto the brownfield register are also available to view on Medway Council's web based Geographical Information System (GIS).

The information in the register is correct at the time of publication. The council will carry out an annual update to the register in line with the government guidance. If you have any queries on the details included on the register, please contact the Planning Policy team using the details below.

For sites to be considered for inclusion onto the register they must meet certain set of criteria, including:

  • Being 'Previously Developed Land';
  • Capable of supporting development of 5 or more dwellings, or being at least 0.25 hectares in size;
  • Are suitable for residential use;
  • Free from any constraints that cannot be mitigated;
  • Deliverable within 5 years.
