Self-build and Custom Housebuilding Register

We have a duty to keep a register of individuals who are seeking serviced plots of land for self-build and custom housebuilding on land in Medway. This duty was introduced through the Self-build and Custom Housebuilding (Register) Regulations 2016 which was subsequently revoked and replaced by The Self Build and Custom Housebuilding Regulations 2016.

The register provides useful information on the level of demand for self-build and custom housebuilding in Medway. We will consider this information when allocating land for different types of development in the Medway Local Plan and when deciding on planning applications for housing.

The register is a key part of our evidence base for planning issues. We will use information in the register to produce an annual report which will include:

  • The number of individuals and associations on the register
  • The number of serviced plots of land sought
  • The preferences for locations in Medway, plot sizes and type of housing

Apply to be added to the register

If you would to like apply to be added to the register to show your interest in acquiring a serviced plot of land to self or custom build a house to occupy as your sole or main residence in Medway, please complete the relevant form below.  People can register either as an individual or as an association of individuals. If you are a couple, or two or more members of one household jointly seeking to acquire a plot, please nominate one member to apply for entry onto the register as an individual.

We will determine your application within 28 days of receiving your form.  Notification of your eligibility will be sent to you within 28 days of the date of determination.  We will keep your details on record and notify you if a suitable plot becomes available. We will not share your personal contact details without your permission.

Medway is currently preparing a new Local Plan and is presently at the second stage, Development Options, which provides a draft vision for Medway in 2035.  The Development Options document includes emerging approaches to policies to address key issues facing Medway's communities, economy and environment, including self build and custom house-building.  Please see the Future Medway page for more information.

Self build and custom house-building register headline data

Local planning authorities do not have to publish their register, but are recommended to publish headline data (such as the number of individuals and associations on the register, the number of plots sought, location preferences, plot size and the type of housing intended to be built).  Medway will publish this information for each base period.  The first base period ran from the date the register was first established by Medway (1 April 2016) until the day before section 10 of the Housing and Planning Act 2016 came into force (30 October 2016).  Each subsequent base period is the period of 12 months beginning immediately after the end of the previous base period.
