Village School

Headteacher at one of the last true village schools in Kent, Throwley Primary School, high in the North Downs.

In the 111 years of its operation the school had 11 substantive headteachers, with each having lived in the schoolhouse. This was a unique three-way partnership between school and parish (St Michaels and All Angels, Throwley) and country estate (Belmont House, and the estate of Lord Harris). The talk expands on this long-disappeared way of life and explains how this tiny school was so successful.

The talk lasts at least 1 hour.

12,000 children

I enjoyed a successful career as a primary headteacher, having led schools in Faversham, Rochester, Strood, Rainham and Margate.

The talk considers the challenges and joys of headship, navigating inspection, and the changing nature of school leadership.
