Travel plans

Travel plans outline how residents, students and employees are travelling.

By setting out aims, targets and actions, they encourage the use of sustainable transport such as:

  • walking
  • cycling
  • public transport
  • car sharing.

Travel plans form an important part of Medway’s Local Transport Plan. The plan includes developing a new travel strategy with a greater focus on cycling initiatives.

With the upcoming Medway Local Plan 2041, it is vital that we form and maintain partnerships and create, monitor and update travel plans across the council. By doing so, we'll be able to mitigate any possible travel impact caused by the predicted population growth.

Types of travel plans

There are 3 types of travel plans:

  • residential - for new housing developments
  • school - for students, parents, school staff, visitors and residents
  • workplace - for existing and new workplaces.

How to create a travel plan

To create an effective travel plan you should:

  • appoint a suitable Travel Plan Coordinator
  • set up a working group
  • set out clear and achievable aims, objectives and targets
  • monitor and review the plan annually to check progress and revise accordingly.
