Location: Five locations across Medway

A set of five statues, each illustrating the important coronavirus (COVID-19) messages, surrounded by illustrations of the other 4 messages, and accompanied by an illustrated map.

One of five statues in Rochester.

This piece is among a set of five statues that have been made and placed around the Medway towns to illustrate the five coronavirus safety messages:

  • wear a mask
  • pay with card, where possible
  • stay indoors if you have symptoms
  • wash your hands
  • keep your distance.

Each statue is made up of steel nuts and washers, welded together to form a 'cage' around a glass heart.

Through the centre of each heart runs a 'heartbeat'. Whilst every heart and every statue are different, the heartbeat running through the middle is identical. This reflects the need for us to work together, with one heart, to keep ourselves and our community safe. Many people. One goal. Medway, together, stronger.

You can find the statues at:

  • Chatham Bus Station
  • Rochester War Memorial
  • Gillingham High Street at the junction of James Street
  • Friary Place, Strood

These pieces are a collaboration between three artists. The statues have been made by Matt Wass of Rustcycle Creations, the glass hearts by Charlie of Charlie Noel Glass and the artwork by Mona of Mona Whitton Art and Events.
