Gillingham POW! was a takeover of Gillingham High Street in partnership with MESS ROOM and Mark Barnes.
Along with other local artists, a public gallery was created that filled the high street with artworks themed on:
- local legends and heroes
- everything that makes Gillingham special.
Each piece was specially commissioned to bring an exciting new cultural offering.
The artworks were available to see from Saturday 28 August 2021 in and around Gillingham High Street.
The artworks are no longer available to view in person, but you can find out who was involved in the project below.
MESS ROOM: Shadow tales gallery of you
MESS ROOM created an outdoor banner gallery using silhouettes of people who had visited Gillingham High Street.
Karen Scudder: Drawing in Gillingham
Karen draws for her mental wellbeing. Karen drew in her sketchbook what she saw whilst walking around the area.
Mark Barnes Design: My name is William Adams
Mark Barnes design created a 6-page comic strip of local legend William Adams.
2A-LTY: Anime Magic
Anime magic was a musical glow in the dark creation that was installed on bus stops around Gillingham.
Hannah Whittaker: Cathedral of Community
Hannah Whittaker took over a building in Gillingham High Street and filled the windows with portraits of the people she saw in Gillingham High Street.
Nicole Mollett: Gillingham Drawing Book
The Gillingham Drawing book is a new creative resource for the people of Gillingham.
Mona Whitton: Inspire and Aspire
Mona Whitton created lino printed pieces of inspirational characters which were hung from the lamp posts in Gillingham High Street.
Nicole Mollett: The Drinkers of Coffee
A short graphic story inspired by the words of Medway poet Rosemary Tonks.
Natalie Clark: Rebranded
Natalie Clark is a multimedia artist who works with:
- ceramics
- textiles
- stitch.
She created some beautifully witty sculptures that were in the plant and tree pits of Gillingham High Street.
Sam Art: Gyllingas
Sam Art is a freehand artist who created a portrait of the Saxon war lord Gyllingas.
