We are highlighting the support available for carers during Carers Week.

Carers Week (Monday, 5 to Sunday, 11 June) is an annual awareness campaign which aims to raise awareness of carers and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities across the UK. The awareness week also helps people who may not think of themselves as carers access support.

We currently commission Carers First to provide information and tailored support for all carers in Medway, including young carers, in a way that suits them, either online, by phone or face-to-face. Carers are encouraged to find out more by phoning 0300 303 1555 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Thursday or between 9am and 4.30pm on Fridays. Carers can also email hello@carersfirst.org.uk.

To mark Carers Week Carers First is holding an information and advice marketplace event at Rochester Corn Exchange on Wednesday, 7 June between 11am and 3pm. Visitors will be able to meet Care First staff and find out more about the support services on offer. Although this is a drop-in event booking is essential. To book email medwayevents@carersfirst.org.uk or phone 0300 303 1555.

Carers in Medway may also be eligible for financial support including council tax reductions and exemptions. Residents who are carers or care workers and those who are disabled, or have dementia, may also be eligible for a council tax discount.

Ensuring carers receive the recognition they deserve

Cllr Teresa Murray, Deputy Leader of Medway Council and Portfolio Holder for Health and Adults’ Services, said: “I am pleased we are supporting Carers Week. We understand the vital contributions carers make to support the health and wellbeing of those they care for. We are committed to continuing to support carers across Medway and ensuring they receive the recognition and support they deserve.”

Young carers are not alone

Cllr Adam Price, Medway Council’s Lead Member for Children’s Services, said: “Residents can become carers at any age and we want all young carers in Medway to know that they are not alone. We offer a range of support and I would encourage anyone who is helping to care for a friend, or relative, to access the support available.”
