We have launched a new campaign to tackle inconsiderate and illegal parking outside schools.
The ‘Think Smart, Park Safe’ campaign aims to keep the roads and footways outside of schools free from parked cars to improve safety for pedestrians.
All of Medway’s schools are invited to take part in the campaign and are encouraged to contact the council for resources, including the loan of a ‘Think Smart, Park Safe’ banner that can be put up outside the school gates and a leaflet that can be shared with parents.
As part of the campaign, schools are encouraged to run their own poster competition to spread the message, with the winning pupil from each school receiving a certificate from us.
Fantastic initiative
Cllr Tris Osborne, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Safety and Enforcement, said: “The ‘Think Smart, Park Safe’ campaign is a fantastic initiative which will continue to raise awareness about the important issue of parking safely around Medway’s schools. We ask motorists to park considerately, even when in a hurry. Working together will play a vital role in making a positive change to achieve a safer school environment for all. I am also delighted that we are encouraging Medway’s children and young people to have their say on this important issue, providing more opportunities to make Medway even more child-friendly.”
Clear focus
Balfour Infant School took part in an early trial of the campaign. Ms Atkinson, Head Teacher at Balfour Infant School, said: “We have found the banner useful in raising awareness for road safety around our school. The banner has given the school a clear focus for discussion around road safety with the children. This forms an important part of our whole school strategy around safety.”

Staying safe on the road
With longer summer days here, more children could be out playing so it is important to keep yourself and others safe on Medway’s roads. Our Road Safety Team is encouraging residents to follow these road safety tips to help keep Medway’s roads safe:
- Be alert – avoid distractions when driving and keep your full attention on the road and look out for pedestrians, motorbikes, cyclists and other road users.
- Role model – take time to explain and practice the green cross code to your children whilst walking.
- Take extra care – the school run and morning commute can be hectic – allow extra time so you don’t feel rushed.
- Make sure you are fit to drive – take regular breaks and do not drive if tired, stressed or on medication that affects driving.
- Stick to the limits – always obey the speed limits and slow down when driving past schools and other heavily populated areas to keep everyone safe.
