Residents are being encouraged to have their say on proposals for nine further Schools Streets in Medway.

The consultation will open on Monday, 16 September and run for six weeks – closing at midnight on Sunday, 27 October.

Earlier this year, we introduced School Streets at seven schools across Medway. This proposal would see the introduction of nine more School Streets at the following locations:

  • Crest Infant & Nursery School / Delce Academy, Rochester
  • Cliffe Woods Primary School, Cliffe Woods
  • Fairview Community Primary, Rainham
  • High Halstow Primary Academy, High Halstow
  • Hilltop Primary School, Frindsbury
  • Horsted Primary, Chatham
  • The King’s Pre & Preparatory, Rochester
  • St Margaret’s Infant School and St Margaret’s Church of England Junior School, Rainham
  • St William of Perth Catholic Primary School, Rochester

In addition to the consultation on the proposed School Streets above, we will also be working with New Horizons Children’s Academy, Holcombe Grammar School and the local community to co-design an additional School Street proposal, which will also go to public consultation at a later date.

School Streets are delivered as part of Medway’s Safer, Healthier Streets Programme, and aim to make the streets outside Medway’s schools safer and healthier for children by prioritising pedestrians and cyclists.

A School Street is a road outside a school that has temporary vehicle restrictions at drop-off and pick-up times during the school term. The road becomes a pedestrian and cycle only area during these times.

Traffic restrictions don’t impact vehicles with an exemption or emergency services.

Static cameras are installed to capture vehicles that enter the School Street zone without an exemption.

Making roads safer

Cllr Alex Paterson, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, Highways and Enforcement, said: “The first School Streets have transformed active journeys to school for thousands of pupils across Medway – creating a calmer environment at the school gate, making roads safer and reducing the pollution being breathed in by young people. That’s why I’m committed to further rollout of the scheme where appropriate. I would ask residents, teachers, parents and anyone else with an interest, to help us fine-tune the details of these proposals for the next wave of School Streets, so that they can deliver the maximum benefit.”
