Residents are being warned about a speeding ticket text message scam.

There have been reports of residents receiving text messages saying they have received a speeding ticket with a link to pay via a fake website.

Medway Council does not issue speeding tickets, these are issued by Kent Police. Kent Police will never contact you about a speeding ticket via text message. They will only ever issue speeding tickets by sending them through the post to the registered keeper of the vehicle, or verbally at the side of the road with a follow-up letter in the post.

Details of how to pay or appeal a speeding ticket will be included in the letter you receive.

Residents are also reminded about a similar scam that has recently been reported where scammers will text you about a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) and ask you to pay via a fake website. Our Parking Enforcement team will only ever issue a PCN by placing it on a vehicle’s windshield, or by sending it through the post. Details of how to pay or appeal a PCN are included on the back of the ticket.

If you receive any messages like this, we would encourage you to report it to Action Fraud, either through their website or by calling 0300 123 2040.
