A better Medway

Medway Council is proud to support World Mental Health Day today (Thursday, 10 October).

This year’s theme ‘Mental Health at Work’ highlights the importance of having a safe and healthy workplace environment and the positive impact that has on our mental health.

We provide a range of mental health support, including the Medway Healthy Workplace Programme, which helps local businesses support the health and wellbeing of their staff.

Businesses are supported to work through the Medway Healthy Workplace Programme award framework, which is endorsed by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities. They are encouraged to develop a health at work action plan to support the health needs of their staff, and can also access mental health awareness training.

As businesses progress through the programme, they are given awards to mark to their journey towards being a healthy workplace, starting with bronze through to silver, gold and platinum.

There are also lots of other resources available on our website to help support residents with their mental wellbeing in their day-to-day lives, including the ‘Release the Pressure’ service, which offers free expert advice from trained counsellors.

Free online mental health support is also available to all adults in Medway through Qwell. Residents can access a range of support through Qwell, including live chat with mental health practitioners, self-help videos, activities and community support.

On Saturday, 12 October, there will also be the very first Medway DadSpace meet-up at the Moot Brewery & Taproom, Rochester from 10am to 12pm. DadSpace is a free community initiative which gives dads a safe space to talk and share their experiences. Find out more and book your spot today.

You are not alone

Cllr Teresa Murray, Deputy Leader of Medway Council and Portfolio Holder for Public Health, said: “It is just as important to look after your mental wellbeing as it is your physical health, but taking those first steps towards support can be hard for some people. Different approaches work for different people, but I want everybody out there to know, that no matter what you’re going through, there is help and support for you out there. You are not alone.

“Given this year’s topic for World Mental Health Day, I also want to remind employers in Medway that our Healthy Workplace Programme is a fantastic resource which can help support the health and wellbeing of your staff. If you want to find out more – I would encourage you to get in touch with our friendly team today.”
