Almost 66,000 people took advantage of the free bus travel weekends in Medway during December.

Overall, 65,959 people used local bus services during the free travel initiative across the two weekends, marking an increase of 38% over the number of passengers expected to travel over two non-promotion weekends on buses.

In December, two free bus travel weekend were held so that residents and visitors could travel throughout Medway using public transport for free. The initiative, which is funded by the government, ran on Saturday, 14 & Sunday, 15 December, and Saturday, 21 & Sunday, 22 December.

Fantastic to see that people took full advantage

Cllr Simon Curry, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Climate Change and Strategic Regeneration, said: “Using public transport is better for our environment and helps to reduce congestion on our roads. We are always looking to encourage people to use public transport whenever possible, so it is fantastic to see that people took full advantage of being able to travel across Medway for free during our free bus travel weekends.”

Between September and December in 2024, more than 2million bus passenger journeys were undertaken in Medway, which is the highest since pre-COVID figures in 2019.

We remain committed to improving public transport services in Medway and will continue to explore ways to further improve the travel experience for all passengers through our Bus Service Improvement Plan.
