The winning schools of Medway Council’s active travel competitions from International Walk to School Month have been announced.

Two competitions, Little Trekkers and Striders, took place in October 2024 during International Walk to School Month for primary and secondary schools across Medway.

The challenges helped to encourage pupils to travel to and from school in an active and fun way, helping to create long-term green travel habits.

In the primary school Little Trekkers category, St Margaret’s at Troy Town CE Primary School saw the highest number of pupils use active travel during the challenge with an impressive 84.6 per cent, winning the top prize of a £500 Halfords gift voucher.

Oasis Academy Skinner Street (77 per cent) clinched second place winning a £300 Halfords gift voucher, and Miers Court Primary School (76.2 per cent) secured third place and a £200 Halford gift voucher.

In the Striders category for secondary schools, The Victory Academy recorded the highest percentage of active travel journeys securing a £500 Halfords gift voucher in the process.

The winning schools also received a personalised framed certificate, and every school that took part in either challenge received an e-certificate in recognition of their efforts.

Schools that took part monitored how many of their pupils travelled to school by walking, using their wheelchair, cycling, scooting or by park and stride (walking the last 10minutes of the journey).

Create green healthy habits from a young age

Cllr Simon Curry, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Climate Change and Strategic Regeneration, said: “I would like to say a huge congratulations to the winning schools, but also to every single pupil who took part in these competitions! Encouraging our young people to create these green healthy habits from a young age is really important, so it is fantastic to see everyone taking part.

“Active travel is a win-win for everyone – we see less cars on the road, which helps to lower congestion and pollution, and our young people get the chance to be even more active. We will be running more competitions this year, so make sure you keep an eye out and get involved!”

The next active school travel competition is just around the corner, with the national Big Walk and Wheel campaign taking place from Monday, 24 March to Friday, 4 April.
