Work to bring a brand-new exciting water play area at the iconic Strand Lido and Leisure Park has officially started.
Known as a ‘splash pad’, the beach-themed water feature will have more than 30 ground-level sensor-activated water jets for children to splash, play and soak in the fun.
Aimed at children aged between 3 and 11-years-old, the new flat play area is due to open from Saturday, 24 May, alongside The Strand Lido opening season, and will replace the existing paddling pool.
The splash pad, which will be completely free to use, will initially be open on weekends from 11am to 5pm, before opening daily throughout the summer school holidays from 11am to 5pm.
As part of the work, the surrounding area will also be refreshed, with a relaxed seating area, new bins and railings being installed.
Invested in this exciting project
Cllr Nina Gurung, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Heritage, Culture and Leisure, said: “The Strand, which is almost 130 years old, is a proud and iconic piece of Medway’s history and the only remaining riverside tidal saltwater pool in the country. We are proud to have invested in this exciting project to improve the already great offering and add a brand-new fun feature for our children and families to enjoy both this summer and for years to come! I look forward to seeing it take shape over the coming months, and hope as many of you as possible are able to splash, play and soak in the fun at The Strand this summer!”
The splash pad is being designed and installed by specialist contractors Fountaineers, and funded through Section 106 contributions.
