A Medway Council-run care home has received a good rating by Ofsted, after an inspector was welcomed by the children’s smiles, laughter and positive interactions.
Parklands, in Gillingham, provides short breaks for children aged from five to 18-years-old with a diagnosed learning disability or a learning and physical disability.
Following a good rating in May 2023, an Ofsted inspector visited the home on 4 and 25 February to inspect the overall experiences and progress of children and young people, as well as how well children and young people are helped and protected, and the effectiveness of leaders and managers. Ofsted published its report on Saturday, 29 March with an overall rating of good.
Inspectors found the home has established and purposeful relationships, helping to ensure children feel happy, secure and relaxed when staying away from home. Staff have a clear understanding of each child’s individual targets and recognise their role in supporting children to achieve their goals and independence.
The Medway children’s care home is well equipped with a wide range of high-quality resources, including appropriate toys and interactive games designed to meet the needs and interests of children. A newly installed sensory room features state-of-the-art equipment, providing valuable opportunities for sensory exploration and meaningful experiences.
Parklands has employed cooks on site and inspectors commended the healthy and nutritious meals, with every effort made to understand each child’s dietary, cultural and personal food preferences, with creative methods to support a balanced diet.
The home has undergone a number of changes in leadership over the past year, which had caused instability and inconsistency in managerial oversight. However, a new manager and responsible individual are now in place, working closely together and towards improving the overall leadership provided.
Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder of Children’s Services, Cllr Adam Price, said: “Parklands is a warm and caring environment for children and young people with a learning or physical disability, and I am pleased Ofsted inspectors saw the warmth and breadth of care provided to each individual and their families. The staff are passionate about supporting each individual’s needs and helping them to flourish to meet their own goals.
“I will be working closely with the service on the recommendations made by Ofsted, and I have no doubt that the care provided will only continue to improve.”
