The Leader of Medway Council has issued a statement following the recent biological gender ruling by the Supreme Court.

Cllr Vince Maple said: “In light of the recent biological gender ruling by the Supreme Court, Medway Council will thoughtfully consider what this means for our services and facilities, legally and practically, and we will carefully consider Government guidance as it emerges.

“However, I would like to affirm Medway’s stance - Medway is and will remain an inclusive and accessible place for all. Whilst we don’t have all the answers now, we recognise the importance of providing a safe space as well as accessible toilets across our facilities, and we will be working to provide this as soon as is practically possible.

“We will continue to work as One Medway with our partner agencies to ensure that everyone feels safe and welcomed in Medway, and that our services and facilities can be accessed by all.

“We are proud of the diverse communities living and working within Medway, including our LGBTQIA+ community, and I would ask that everyone continues to treat others with the respect and kindness they too would expect. This is something everyone, from all walks of life, will receive from Medway Council staff, as is embedded in our Values and Behaviours.”
